Listen in to the Redesigning Democracy Summit tonight and tomorrow

Here’s a note from Joan Blades, who’s going to be joining me and several dozen others in Raleigh later today for an exciting summit.  Joan is co-founder of MoveOn.org and co-founder of Living Room Conversations.

Today and tomorrow I’m going to be at the Redesigning Democracy Summit in NC with a remarkable group of leaders in the field of dialogue as well as a few folks that some people might not necessarily expect.  I’ll have the opportunity to present Living Room Conversations as a process for individuals and organizations to employ to reweave our relationships and an entry point into other facilitated forms of dialog and collaborative problem solving.  (Amanda Roman and I have offered Living Room Conversations as a candidate for the Catalyst Bridge Building Award)

Grover Norquist and I will be on the first panel tonight, talking about The State of our Democracy: Lessons from 2012.  As a founder of MoveOn, I’ve met with Grover at transpartisan gatherings as long ago as 2005.  Since that time, I’ve come to believe that our leaders have become hemmed in by increasingly impermeable party lines.  I’m hopeful that deep and broad citizen engagement can provide the momentum required to free good leaders to act on issues.  When citizens create broad support for action, leaders will be empowered.  If we are able to collectively create a virtuous cycle of offline to online engagement starting with early adapters and then spreading to outward -who knows what change we might see!

I dream that in this meeting we really will begin to redesign our democracy, because it is high time to do so.  Listen in.  The Redesigning Democracy Summit will be live streamed, thanks to the generous support of Raleigh-based WRAL News. Interested citizens across the country can have access and input to the conversations at the summit.  You can view the online broadcast via www.wral.com, or by finding a link to the stream on the IEI website, www.emergingissues.org.

You are invited to interact with the program and speakers via the dedicated Twitter hashtag #RDS12, or by sending emails with questions to emerging_issues@ncsu.edu.
