New Opportunity to Study Public Participation

IAP2 and the Kettering Foundation have embarked on a joint research project that will explore the question “What is the cultural context of public participation?” in four regions of the world. They are seeking interviewers for these regions. The possible regions are: Latin America, the United Kingdom/Western Europe, South Africa, Australasia or Southeast Asia.and for the one region that’s already been chosen, the United States/Canada, too. The identification of interviewers will in a large part drive selection of the remaining three regions chosen for this project. Interested individuals are asked to submit an expression of interest, with a sentence or two describing their capabilities/experience based on the criteria listed below. Copies of the project overview are available upon request. To read the criteria and contact information, click on the linnk below.

Professionals and students alike are encouraged to apply. IAP2 has a budget
for interviewers but at this point in time we are analyzing it to determine
how many interviewers can be used and payment rates. More details about
stipends will be forthcoming in the fall as we analyze each region and our
overall needs to get the work done.

The interviewer criteria are:

1. Familiarity with existing networks in the selected country/region
2. Estimate the extent to which the person is present in the country/region
3. Awareness of the status of public participation in that country/region
4. Familiarity with public participation theory and practice
5. Ability to capture the anthropological perspective of the region/country: its practices, norms, values
6. Ability to contribute commentaries that promote sensemaking of interview material/assist with understanding the views that are collected
7. Be able to commit to the project timeline
8. Ability to accurately document views of others
9. Ability to analyse views that are collected
10. Computing skills to present data in a readable form

Interviewer candidates are encouraged to submit a 1-2 page resume with their
expression of interest. The deadline for expressions of interest is
September 30, 2005. Submit expressions of interest to Beth Offenbacker,
co-chair, IAP2 Research Committee, at beth@waterfordinc.com.
