Simon Fraser University – The Morris J. Wosk Centre for Dialogue

A conference centre located in Vancouver, British Columbia (Canada), the Morris J. Wosk Centre for Dialogue is dedicated to understanding effective communication. Dialogue activities include undergraduate courses, graduate internships, professional development and programs of research into the application of dialogue and of lessons learned from experience.

Since its opening in September 2000, the Centre has been the catalyst for issues ranging from restorative justice to real estate, health care to transit, and international law to art. The Wosk Centre is an intellectual home and an advocate for dialogue. At the Centre practitioners, researchers and students of dialogue probe the nature of dialogue and they nurture it in practice.

Research

At the Morris J. Wosk Centre for Dialogue, we are following the evolution of thinking about dialogue, applying it to the dialogue process and weighing the results. The Centre is a growing repository of research papers, reports, and proceedings about dialogue. It also welcomes leading practitioners and analysts and their presentations.

The planning of a particular dialogue encounter or series of encounters requires attention to a number of considerations. These include questions of inclusion, agenda setting, invitations, format, resources, the role of content experts and facilitators, and evaluation, to name a few. The work of the Centre for Dialogue's Dialogue Forum has generated important research in this respect, as has the Dialogue Institute.

Many organizations that have independently convened dialogue sessions at the Centre have also learned lessons born of their dialogue-making experiences worth documenting, analyzing and representing. From such a research undertaking, a set of principles or planning guidelines will be developed and shared back into the community through a workshop and other gatherings with present and future dialogue conveners.
