The Public and Policy: What Does the Public Have to Contribute? How Can it Make that Contribution? (NIF Report)

The Public and Policy:  What Does the Public Have to Contribute ? How Can it Make that Contribution? is a follow-up report and a personal examination of the issues presented at  A Public Voice 2006 written by Philip D. Stewart. Find more details on the NIF website.

From the report…

Yet, although several thousand citizens participate in several hundred public forums across the United States each year, discussing critical national issues, citizens, by and large, still feel shut out of politics, and elected officials still find it nearly impossible to address pressing national concerns in any significant way.  The impact of 25 years of public deliberation, and nearly as many years spent trying to find meaningful ways of communicating the results of these deliberations to elected officials is perhaps best described, following David Mathews, as a little red dot in a sea of blue, or as a minuscule counter-cultural movement beating against the established norms of the citizen-as-consumer culture.

More about National Issues Forums and their Reports on the Issues…

The National Issues Forums (NIF) network includes civic, educational, and other organizations, and individuals, whose common interest is to promote public deliberation in America. NIF issue guides introduce participants to several choices or approaches to consider. Rather than conforming to any single public proposal, each choice reflects widely held concerns and principles. Panels of experts review manuscripts to make sure the choices are presented accurately and fairly. Look through all the NIF issue guides and their corresponding moderator guides, DVDs, and other resources at www.nifi.org/issue_books.

Reports are published periodically to communicate the outcomes of forums held across the nation about a particular issue. Making use of participants’ answers to forum questionnaires, reports from moderators, and in-depth studies of selected forums, these reports describe in some detail what happened as people deliberated about the issue at hand.
