Conducting Your Community Dialogue Manual

A companion piece to Building a More United America: Final Report of the Uniting America Series, Conducting Your Community Dialogue was designed to help groups and individuals organize and carry out a community dialogue about issues addressed in the earlier report. Roles for discussants and sample questions for facilitating discussions are included in the 22-page guidebook.

This 2002 manual from The American Assembly provided the essential tools needed to conduct a Uniting America community dialogue: ways for defining ‘your community,’ for choosing a format and for creating discussion questions. In addition, the series report, Building a More United America, was designed to offer local dialogues a national context as well as provide a convenient reference for well-considered policy options.

The American Assembly’s dialogue process worked towards building a constructive consensus for action, and collectively, the dialogues deepened the engagement of individuals in their communities and strengthened the quality of public opinion nationwide.

The National Dialogues, the final part of the Uniting America series, were sponsored by local and regional organizations throughout 2003 and brought the series’ recommendations to the community level. National Dialogues were held in Mississippi, Atlanta, Kansas City, New Orleans, and Baltimore, among other locations.
