Citizens at the Center: A New Approach to Civic Engagement

The central claims of this noteworthy 31-page white paper are that "public service" is a more powerful frame around which to rally Americans for democratic renewal than "civic engagement" and the encouragement of public deliberation should be at the center of renewal efforts. Scholar Peter Levine of the University of Maryland has written that he considers the paper a breakthrough. The Role of Public Relations in Non-Electoral Participative Democracy: A Case Study Examining the Effectiveness of District Assemblies Within Tameside Metropolitan Borough Council

This paper is concerned with how local councils might bring about the renewal of local democracy, and in particular, to the extent to which public relations might contribute to the process of renewal. To begin, the public policy literature is reviewed to investigate the concept of participatory democracy and its application in the UK. The role of local government public relations are then discussed to the extent to which the concepts of public relations and local public participation are linked. The paper then goes on to describe and critically evaluate one particular case where a public relations strategy was used to affect participatory democracy through local forums or district assemblies. Drawing on her empirical work, Mutz suggests that it is doubtful that an extremely activist political culture can also be a heavily deliberative one. One reviewer of this book states "Do you want a political system in which people actively participate or in which people discuss issues with diverse interlocutors? In Hearing the Other Side one of the most creative political scientists working today demonstrates that we cannot have it both ways since, according to varied and appropriate data, deliberation among the politically heterogeneous is inversely related to levels of participation in politics." Voices of Hope: The Story of the Jane Addams School for Democracy

The Jane Addams School for Democracy is no ordinary school. Its diverse staff and students include refugee and immigrant adults and children; faculty and students from nine Twin Cities colleges and universities; and community residents. And 10 years after the school opened, more than 1,500 of its participants have become U.S. citizens. Voices of Hope is an engaging account of the Jane Addams School as told through the voices of the school's participants. The 144-page book features 22 essays by 12 writers, including nonnative English speakers, and more than 75 photos. (continue)

Katherine W. Fanning International Fellowship for Journalism and Democracy

Each year, the Kettering Foundation invites two journalists or scholars from outside the U.S. to spend time at the foundation. In addition to participating in meetings and program work, during their six month stay, fellows engage in original research exploring how the principles of deliberative democracy and civil society can be applied to their work at home. Kettering Foundation – International Civil Society Fellowship

Individuals from partner organizations that have completed the Kettering Foundation's Deliberative Democracy Workshops I and II are eligible for the International Civil Society Fellowship program. These fellowships are usually for six months and include residence and shared research at the foundation. Fellows continue to explore the role of a deliberative public in the political work of their home communities. (continue)

November 5th Coalition

The November 5th Coalition was a collaborative initiative dedicated to using the 2008 presidential election as an opportunity to foster deliberation about how we can collectively mobilize the energies and talents of ordinary citizens to address our challenges.
