Student Problem Identification and Resolution of Issues Together (SPIRIT)

For more than 35 years, the Community Relations Service of the U.S. Department of Justice has worked with schools across the nation. Many school systems have experienced major demographic changes. At times, tensions and disruptions will accompany the process of inclusion and assimilation. The Community Relations Service of the U.S. Department of Justice (CRS) has helped schools to build strategies to improve lines of communication, establish programs to eliminate racial and ethnic misconceptions, and develop plans to prevent conflict and improve intergroup relations among students, faculty, staff, parents and community groups. SPIRIT is one such CRS program. (continue)

At Issue: Marriage. Exploring the Debate Over Marriage Rights for Same-Sex Couples

This resource offers educators six lesson plans for high school aged students that challenges them to explore the range of complex issues reflected in the marriage debate. The resource was developed at the time when the U.S. was awaiting the decision of the Massachusetts Supreme Court on the right of same-sex couples to civil marriage. (continue)

University of Baltimore – Center for Negotiations and Conflict Management

The center provides education, training and services in the broad field of negotiations and conflict prevention, management and resolution. The center emphasizes efforts to disseminate and apply conflict management skills to nourish relationships with the community that will sustain and improve social harmony and increase economic productivity. The center runs a 42-credit Master's program in Negotiations and Conflict Management. (continue)

Beyond Race Awareness: White Racial Identity and Multicultural Teaching

Interviews examined whether white students' shifts in thinking about themselves as racial beings and about systems of oppression during a multicultural education course were evident in later teaching practice. Though students initially resisted learning about their own racism, they eventually became more willing to take some responsibility for racism. (continue)

Making Standards Work for All Students

Most states are establishing some form of academic standards--goals for student learning that define what students should know and be able to do at different stages of their school careers. However, while many people agree with standards in principle, they often have very different ideas about how to make them work in practice: focus on accountability, quality testing and incentives; focus on providing needed resources and support; and focus on flexibility and local control. Most people would agree that you can't have good schools without good teachers, and that it's crucial to ensure there is a quality teacher in every classroom. This Citizen ChoiceWork Guide (and video) is an effort to generate ideas about how to do that, beginning with these ideas: require more thorough preparation for those who want to be teachers; improve the working environment for teachers in the classroom; and attract more talented people to the field and get the most out of them through better pay and smarter incentives. This 184-page guide provides tips and tools for designing and developing effective diversity evaluations. Topics addressed include the need for assessment, designing an evaluation plan, institutional context, audience, data collection and analysis, performance indicators, and theoretical models.
