Teaching Tolerance

Founded in 1991 by the Southern Poverty Law Center, Teaching Tolerance provides educators with free educational materials that promote respect for differences and appreciation of diversity in the classroom and beyond. Our magazine and curriculum kits have earned Oscar nominations, an Academy Award, and more than a dozen honors from the Association of Educational Publishers (EdPress) including the Golden Lamp Award. Beyond Race Awareness: White Racial Identity and Multicultural Teaching

Interviews examined whether white students' shifts in thinking about themselves as racial beings and about systems of oppression during a multicultural education course were evident in later teaching practice. Though students initially resisted learning about their own racism, they eventually became more willing to take some responsibility for racism. (continue)

The Center for Assessment and Policy Development and MP Associates, Inc., runs this website, which offers resources and advice on evaluating a program's effectiveness in bridging racial divides. The site includes all kinds of tools and resources on how to organize and carry out an evaluation, what kinds of questions to ask and outcomes to measure, and also some guidelines for thinking about and using results. Campus Diversity and Student Self-Segregation: Separating Myths from Facts

A survey of the most recent research suggests that, indeed, campus diversity is leading to significant educational and social benefits for all college students. It also suggests that, contrary to popular reports, student self-segregation is not, in fact, a dominant feature of campus life today. This paper summarizes new research on campus diversity and on the actual extent of student self-segregation and interaction across racial/ethnic lines on college campuses today. The Dialogue Guide

Developed in 1999 for National Service programs interested in fostering understanding, respect and teamwork among their diverse participants. The Dialogue guide is designed to help National Service leaders engage their members in meaningful dialogues on race. Written by NCDD's director, Sandy Heierbacher, when she served as a Fellow for the Corporation for National Service. A good primer on intergroup dialogue, the 24-page guide includes sections about why and when to engage in dialogue, what a typical dialogue looks like, a sample dialogue for AmeriCorps programs, and more.
