IUPUI Seeks Director of Center for Teaching and Learning

Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) is seeking an Executive Director for their Center for Teaching and Learning. The Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) was established at IUPUI in 1995. The CTL is a partnership among Academic Affairs, University Information Technology Services and University Library. Beginning in January, 2008, the CTL along with the Center for Service and Learning (CSL) and the Center for Research and Learning (CRL) will form the Consortium on Learning and Scholarship at IUPUI. The mission of the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) is to provide leadership and scholarly expertise to stimulate and support innovation and evidence-based practices in teaching and learning through a collaborative approach that celebrates and embraces the diversity of faculty and students.

The CTL strives to create a safe and supportive environment for faculty to experiment with pioneering approaches in their teaching with strong support from consultants in instructional design and development, instructional technology, and information resources. The Center for Teaching and Learning exists solely to provide assistance to faculty in pursuit of teaching excellence. The CTL partners with faculty to engage in research on teaching and contributes to the scholarly literature on the advancement of excellence in college teaching. Working in close cooperation with our partners in University Information Technology Services and the University Library, the CTL also coordinates its efforts with other campus offices and departments to support University goals and initiatives.

The CTL’s many faculty and academic staff development programs are designed to develop skills necessary to implement powerful pedagogies in the classroom. Regardless of whether the classroom is a large lecture hall, a small seminar course, an online professional program, or a co-curricular experience, powerful pedagogies emphasize student engagement and play a critical role in IUPUI’s efforts to increase student success and retention.

The CTL consists of three units: Instructional Design and Development, Instructional Technology, and Information Resources. The sixteen staff members in the CTL work together to provide consultation to individuals and departments; organize events on teaching, learning, and technology topics; and generate print and electronic resources on teaching. The CTL collaborates closely with other units on campus to accomplish its work.

The Executive Director is expected to:

  • Provide vision and leadership for the Center for Teaching and Learning
  • Plan teaching support services and programs that support student learning and persistence to graduation
  • Maintain close relationships with faculty and academic units
  • Collaborate with the CSL and the CRL to develop strategies to support and enhance student learning
  • Continually identify, implement, and assess practices that support and enhance student learning
  • Network with national groups and individuals in the field of professional development
  • Oversee prudent use of the budget and seek external funding possibilities
  • Contribute to institutional efforts directed toward teaching excellence at IUPUI
  • Collaborate with University College and other academic units to contribute significantly to the undergraduate education experience
  • Participate in committees working on issues related to teaching and learning
  • Ensure that the CTL provides a significant and informed support role in the Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM) Office of Faculty Affairs and Professional Development team
  • Assist in implementing a comprehensive strategic plan for faculty development
  • Serve as or provide an informed consultant and workshop facilitator for IUSM
  • Function as the primary point of contact from the Consortium on Learning and Scholarship to the IUSM. In this capacity work to make connections between IUSM and the rest of IUPUI in order to maximize campus resources and fully serve all members of the faculty

Candidates for this position are expected to be well-versed in:

  • Innovative teaching approaches, e.g. collaborative learning, service learning, problem-based learning, case study method, and writing to learn
  • Use, implementation, and best practices for instructional technologies such as course management systems, ePortfolio, web, instructional multimedia, electronic conferencing, simulations, classroom presentations, etc.
  • Issues regarding the requirements, design, development, implementation, best practices, and collaborative opportunities within the higher education open source community
  • Nontraditional delivery possibilities, such as distance learning, community and work-based programs, alternative scheduling arrangements
  • Learning and program assessment strategies
  • Strategies for organizational development, such as needs analysis or climate surveying, program consultation, reward systems, group and team building, and the influence of environmental factors on teaching and learning

Additional Required Qualifications:

  • Credentials consistent with a tenure-track position
  • Earned doctorate
  • Accomplished teaching in higher education
  • Professional development experience in a postsecondary teaching center
  • Organizational, interpersonal and management skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Appreciation and advocacy for diversity

Additional Preferred Qualifications:

  • Supervisory and administrative experience in higher education
  • Record of publication and participation in national organizations on college teaching
  • Experience working closely with medical faculty and administrators
  • External funding experience
  • Understanding of professional schools
