2013 Year-in-Review Confab Call – What would you want to hear about?

I’ve been thinking that the next NCDD confab call could be a “year-in-review” type call, with several different people from the network providing updates and insights on their work throughout the past year.  We’d do this in January since we all have enough going on this month!

Confab bubble imageThis has been an incredible year for the dialogue and deliberation community, with groundbreaking projects and initiatives popping up all over the place.  I have my own ideas for who we might ask to weigh in about their projects and progress during a Year-In-Review call, but I’m curious to hear what NCDD members would be interested in hearing about.

Please take a second and share your thoughts via the comments here.  What projects, initiatives, or organizations might you want to hear from? What would you like to see included on a call focused on 2013 goings-on in the dialogue and deliberation community?


(By the way, we do have a Tech Tuesday event this month on the 17th, and over 100 people are already signed up to hear from Dave Biggs of MetroQuest about his organization’s view on and approach to tech-enabled public participation. Don’t forget to register if you’re interested!)

    Hi everyone. Being new to the NCDD network I’m soaking it all in and asking myself how I did not hear about the network before…but I’m happy to have found it now.

    I would love to hear from other local governments and how they are institutionalizing the theories and practices of dialogue and deliberation within their institution’s culture. I’d also enjoy hearing how dialogue and deliberation has been successful across cultures both international and national…in what context was this successful and why. Lastly, if there are any initiatives out there around inclusive and welcoming communities that are using dialogue and deliberation practices as the foundation for the initiative I’d enjoy learning more about those too. We have begun one here locally and we are following the collective impact model and have so far engaged the business community, non profits, educational institutions and others. Lastly, hearing about any projects which at the core practice deliberative and dialogue centered approaches would be extremely helpful on many levels. The government context would be helpful as it relates closer to the role I fulfill, however, I’m sure there is crossover between sectors as well…there is learning in everything, right.

    I like your year end review idea. I do not have definitive thoughts about how to choose from among the many amazing people working in the field – but my interests would be in hearing from a combination of long time leaders and those who are newer; a mix of in person and online engagement and also to see what people are learning about engagement at different levels — e.g. natl, state, regional, local gov level and the hyperlocal neighborhood level. Phew – that may be a tall order. And if that’s too much, maybe split the review into two sessions…

    Looking ahead to additional confab calls in 2014:

    • I continue to be interested in the role of what kinds of community-oriented nonpartisan information are we using to inform our dialogues and deliberation. Does it “start where people are” in their comprehension of the issue? Is it culturally competent? Does it accommodate those with average or below average education? Has the work been done to understand the few key concepts or “strategic facts” that help dispel misperceptions? I’d be happy to collaborate with someone on this topic which I believe tends to get less attention than it deserves in our process design. It’d be neat to compare examples of where the information did or not make a difference in how people understood the choices and their relationship to the issue.
    • As a complement to the Tech Tuesdays where we’re exposed to specific new tools, it’d be great to have a session that looks across tools at the integration of in person and digital engagement.
