Editor(s) Needed for Int'l Journal of Public Participatino (IJP2)

NCDD member Nancy Glock-Grueneich just emailed me about this opportunity…

We are seeking an editor to lead, manage and further develop a three-year old online, peer-reviewed journal, with an international audience, the International Journal of Public Participation (IJP2). The mission of the IJP2 is to foster integration and dialogue within the professional field of public participation across its different traditions and related disciplines and to bridge theory and practice.

The Editor of IJP2 provides overall leadership and vision for the Journal as well as content planning and development, consistent with its mission and that of its parent organization, the International Association for Public Participation (IAP2). The Editor works with the IJP2 Editorial Board and its Executive Committee, as an ex-officio member, and with current and prospective authors, reviewers and audiences. (This position may also be shared between co-editors, applying together, with complementary qualifications that together cover the requirements of the position.)

Overall Responsibilities of the Editor:

  • Provide leadership to and manage all aspects of the publication of IJP2, ensuring it meets the objectives and cross-disciplinary goals of the Journal and IAP2, and maintains its good reputation.
  • Solicit and select manuscripts for the Journal from a wide variety of appropriate sources within and outside of the IAP2 membership.
  • Ensure publication of at least two peer-reviewed issues and recruit at least one guest-edited special issue each year as per established goals, budgets, guidelines and timelines.
  • Serve as the “official ambassador” for the Journal throughout IAP2 and related communities.

Specific Tasks of the Editor

With the assistance of the Editorial Board,

  • Receive, track, and process manuscripts.
  • Manage peer reviews, author feedback letters and status reports in a professional, timely and confidential manner.
  • Provide leadership for the Journal’s continuous evolution, including the development of editorial policy and procedures, methods for working productively with authors, and criteria for manuscript review.
  • Identify and address issues requiring Editorial Board attention and report regularly to them, or as requested, on the status of the current Journal issue, actions to implement their policies, and matters requiring the Board’s attention.

The Editor also assists the Editorial Board in the following Board tasks, as requested and as time permits,

  • Recommend new members to the Editorial Board for appointment by the IAP2 Board.
  • Perform outreach activities to promote the Journal to new audiences by soliciting authors and reviewers, connecting with programs on public participation and related fields, and seeking inclusion of the Journal in libraries and research databases.

Requirements:

  • Prior experience as a journal editor or reviewer, with a clear understanding of the role of a journal editor and capacity to fulfill it.
  • Strong writing and editing skills encompassing both academic and practical forms of writing.
  • Record of scholarly publications, demonstrating a commitment to upholding rigorous standards of thinking and writing.
  • Knowledge of the field of public participation.
  • Commitment and ability to carry out IJP2’s mission, including developing less experienced authors to achieve publishable manuscripts and working with and across practitioner, government, academic and lay communities.
  • Ability to develop a peer-reviewed journal in its early stages and to work collaboratively with an editorial board, reviewers, authors and colleagues.
  • Ability to attend to details, meet deadlines, maintain timely communications on critical matters, and document fulfillment of requirements where needed.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with the publication of a peer-reviewed journal in an on-line format.
  • Membership in IAP2, attendance at its meetings or conferences and/or familiarity with the Journal.
  • A presence or reputation within at least one of the fields related to public participation.
  • Personal or professional networks across fields related to public participation.

Honorarium

$4,000 per regular published issue, with a minimum of two per year and $1,000 per guest-edited special issue as these are published.

To Submit an Application (Deadline: September 30, 2008)

Please supply the following materials in electronic form (Word or PDF)…

  1. Cover letter addressing your qualifications.  In the case of a proposal for co-editors, the cover letter should also address how responsibilities would be shared between the co-editors.
  2. Curriculum Vitae
