Health Care Working Group Releases Recommendations

The Citizens’ Health Care Working Group held public meetings throughout 2006 for feedback on America’s health care system. The Working Group just released its final recommendations for Congress and the President on how to Make Health Care Work for All Americans.

The Working Group’s central recommendation is for Congress to establish public policy that guarantees access to affordable health care for all Americans by 2012. Their report says, “Americans should have a health care system where everyone participates, regardless of their financial resources or health status, with benefits that are sufficiently comprehensive to ensure access to appropriate, high-quality care without endangering individual or family financial security.”

This unprecedented effort engaged over 7,000 Americans in 98 face-to-face discussions on health care between January and August 2006. AmericaSpeaks assisted with many of these deliberative forums.  Additionally, another 28,000 online and written comments were collected. The recommendations have been submitted by the Working Group to the President, who has 45 days to respond, and then five congressional committees will hold hearings on the recommendations and the President’s report.

Congress and the President created the Working Group to listen to Americans’ answers to four vital questions and then use the responses to recommend how to make health care work for all Americans. You can learn about the health care system by reading the Health Report to the American People, and read the Working Group’s Final Recommendations.
