News from AmericaSpeaks

In their September 27th Network News e-newsletter, AmericaSpeaks outlined two impressive recent projects.  AmericaSpeaks collaborated with the Clinton Global Initiative earlier in the month to facilitate small discussions for over 1,000 “changemakers” who attended their New York City gathering.  In addition, AmericaSpeaks concluded one of the largest citizen engagement efforts ever conducted in the U.S. on September 16 at a Regional Town Meeting in Akron, Ohio. The 900-person town meeting was the culmination of a process that has engaged more than 21,000 people in setting priorities for revitalizing Northeast Ohio’s economy.

AmericaSpeaks Partners with the Clinton Global Initiative

AmericaSpeaks collaborated with the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) to provide powerful, small facilitated discussions for the “changemakers” who attended last week’s conference in New York City. Over one thousand people participated in CGI’s second annual meeting, including current and former heads of state from every continent, Hollywood celebrities, and leaders from the business and civil sectors. This group was brought together to pool their resources, intellect and influence to devise and implement innovative solutions for some of the globe’s toughest problems. Four key areas were examined at CGI: Global Health, Energy and Climate Change, Poverty Alleviation and Mitigating Religious and Ethnic Conflict. CGI brought AmericaSpeaks on board to provide our model of small discussions and fast-cycle feedback to the participants. These elements provided essential opportunities for idea sharing and building agreements for action.

Facilitators recruited by CGI appreciated what AmericaSpeaks brought to the conference. One facilitator said, “The table discussions are unbelievable. The way everyone’s status equals out and people are willing to meet each other to discuss topics of common interest is extremely powerful and telling.” About the technology, we heard, “The technology used with the laptops are excellent and generate a sense of transparency among participants that motivates people.”

Each CGI participant is required to sign up for an actionable “commitment” to improve an issue of their choice. Over $7.5 billion dollars and countless volunteer hours were committed during CGI and many more commitments are expected. Visit the CGI website for examples of this and last year’s commitments. Also posted on the CGI website are the highly recommended archived video, transcripts and podcasts of the conference sessions, full of intelligent, moving and inspiring presentations.

21,000 People Engaged with Voices & Choices in Northeast Ohio

AmericaSpeaks concluded one of the largest and most innovative citizen engagement efforts ever conducted in the United States on Saturday September 16 at a Regional Town Meeting in Akron, Ohio. Participants made Tough Choices in six policy areas, such as competitive business environment, racial isolation and income inequality, or sprawl and regional connectivity. The 900-person town meeting was the culmination of a process that has engaged more than 21,000 people in setting priorities for revitalizing Northeast Ohio’s economy. To read the meeting’s preliminary report, visit http://www.voiceschoices.org/node/194.

For the past 18 months, AmericaSpeaks has led Voices & Choices in partnership with a coalition of 80 local foundations, called the Fund for Our Economic Future. During this time, Voices & Choices, AmericaSpeaks and its volunteer network and held thousands of one-on-one interviews, hundreds of leadership workshops, two Regional Town Meetings, over thirteen thousand community conversations and engaged hundreds of people in online workbooks.

The final step for Voices and Choices starts this Friday with a series of online dialogues that provide participants with an opportunity to continue shaping Northeast Ohio’s future. Dialogue groups will be comprised of approximately 20 to 25 people who will go online and contribute to the discussion at their own schedule during the three week event. Each dialogue group will discuss key actions and solutions raised during September’s Regional Town Meeting.

Congratulations to the residents of Northeast Ohio, the dedicated staff and volunteers of Voices and Choices, the AmericaSpeaks staff working on this project and The Fund For Our Economic Future, who all supported and participated in the deliberations that created a series of recommendations to boost the region’s sluggish economy. Keep an eye on this project over the Fall and Winter, as Northeast Ohio takes next steps into a new future.
