Graphic Faciliation Workshop Offered in Bay Area

Due in part to the interest expressed by participants at the August NCDD conference in San Francisco, Mariah Howard and Nancy Margulies will be presenting a workshop on Graphic Facilitation in the San Francisco Bay Area in January or February.  Nancy and Mariah graphically facilitated the plenary session on the second day of the conference.

NCDD members will receive a 20% discount on the $150 registration (just let them know you’re an NCDD member when you register). Participants will learn to present their ideas using Mindscaping and Mind Mapping, take notes more effectively, creat attractive flip charts that are clear and memorable and plan projects in a more effective way. Basic drawing skills will be taught as well.

Depending upon numbers the workshop will be either in San Francisco or south of the city, near half Moon Bay. The group size will be limited to 18. The workshop will take place on Sunday, January 7 or Sunday, February 4 (or both!) from 9:30 to 4:30.

To register, contact Nancy Margulies by emailing nm@montara.com or calling 650-728-9287.

The elements of a typical workshop include:

  • 8:30  Demonstration: Making a Mindscape and Mind Map graphic document
  • 8:50  Participants create maps first: words and color only/ debrief
  • 9:15  Break activity: Improvisational theater game
  • 9:30  Symbol drawing demonstration and symbol drawing experiential
  • 10:00 Second Mindscape graphic record demonstrated
  • 10:15 Participants make a map/mindscape using pictures, symbols, cartoons and key words
  • 10:45  Partners share maps
  • 11:00  Break
  • 11:15  Uses of Mindscaping: create a large group map of applications for mapping in professional settings
  • 11:30 Questions and answers about Mindscapes and other forms of graphic note-taking
  • 11:45  Personal planning for future use of Mindscape notes.
  • 12:30 Lunch and Improv activity

In the afternoon you will deepen skills through application to real-life issues and practice of drawing skills. The group learn to create flip charts and overheads to use mapping for presentations and group facilitation. Practice of mapping while listening to a live presentation will also be offered.

During the workshop we will divide into two tracks for the sessions on drawing. That way we can accommodate those who have experience drawing or graphically recording and still offer the basics for those who are beginning. No art skills are required, just a willingness to leave realizing that you CAN draw.

We will work on skills of mapping for personal and professional use and move and by the end of the day  you will have an opportunity to practice mapping live. Skills in lettering and printing on flip charts will also be taught as well as the how-to’s of presenting your own ideas to a group and recording the ideas of others.

Mariah will lead us through some simple Improvisational theater exercises during breaks and you will come away with some activities that you can use with groups you facilitate in the future.
