National Institute for Civil Discourse looking for E.D.

I received this job announcement this morning from Joe Goldman, who’s now with the Omidyar Network…

The National Institute for Civil Discourse (NICD) was created this Spring in the wake of the tragic shootings in Arizona that wounded Congresswoman Gabby Giffords and killed many others, including Chief Justice John Roll and a nine-year old girl named Christina Taylor Green. In a speech to the nation after the shooting, President Obama called upon the nation to become what the slain young girl had imagined America to be. The President said, “At a time when our discourse has become so sharply polarized – at a time when we are far too eager to lay blame for al that ails the world at the feet of those who think differently than we do – it’s important for us to pause for a moment and make sure that we are talking with each other in a way that heals, not a way that wounds.”

The organization has an incredible national board that includes Presidents Clinton and Bush Senior, Tom Daschle, Sandra Day O’Connor, Colin Powell, Madeline Albright, Katie Couric, Greta Van Susteren, Donna Brazille, Alan Simpson, Robert Reiche, etc, etc.  It seeks to encourage civic leaders to embrace vigorous debate in a way that allows for diverse perspectives to be shared, for complex issues to be discussed thoughtfully, and for challenging topics to be explored without resorting to invective and personal attacks.

NICD is well positioned to make a real difference. It now needs a strong, visionary leader to take it forward.

I hope that you will pass the job description on to anyone who you think may be interested. And do let me know if you have any questions.
