ECPR Summer course on Deliberative Polls and Deliberation

I got a nice message yesterday from Robert Luskin at the University of Texas at Austin, asking me to pass along the following announcement to the NCDD network.  Bob has worked with Jim Fishkin on Deliberative Polling projects for many years, for those not familiar with the name.

I’ll be offering a one-week course on “Deliberative Polling and the Empirics of Deliberation” at the ECPR (European Consortium for Political Research) Summer School in Methods and Techniques at the University of Ljubljana (Slovenia) from July 30 through August 3 this summer.  Since the course may appeal to folks who wouldn’t ordinarily be tracking the offerings of a summer school focused on quantitative methods and techniques, I’m trying to get the word out. So please tell anyone you think might be interested, feel free to forward or post the information anywhere you think potential students might see it, and, if you can think of any other ways I might try to get the word out, please let me know.

To add just a shade more description, the course is about the study of deliberation and its effects, principally though not necessarily exclusively by means of Deliberative Polling. We shall discuss the theory of deliberation (how to define it, what should be expected of it); the design and instrumentation of processes, notably Deliberative Polling, intended to induce it and measure its effects; and some of the statistical issues that arise in analyzing the results.  A more detauiled description and course outline can be found at the Summer School’s website at http://new.ecprnet.eu/MethodSchools/2012_Ljubljana/CourseList.aspx.

Overall, the summer school runs July 27-August 10.  Ljubljana, with its Alpine scenery and climate, is by all accounts a very nice place to spend some time in the summer.  Again further information–about the program, the practical details of attending, and the courses–can be obtained from the website.
