Museums of Conscience Seeking Director of Programs

Liz Sevcenko just sent us the following job opportunity: The International Coalition of Historic Site Museums of Conscience (www.sitesofconscience.org) is a network of historic sites dedicated to remembering past struggles for justice and addressing their contemporary legacies. They are seeking a Director of Programs in the Americas to develop and oversee the Coalition’s work in North and South America. The goal of the Director of Programs in the Americas is to coordinate productive exchange and learning among members and affiliates in the region that builds the capacity for historic sites to serve as centers for civic dialogue. S/he is responsible for developing, maintaining, and growing the Coalition network, and for developing and dissemination of Coalition training resources. S/he reports directly to the Director of the Coalition and is supported by a shared administrative assistant.

Specific responsibilities include to:

  • Develop and manage American regional and thematic networks: Immigration Sites of Conscience; American Indian Sites of Conscience; and South American Sites of Conscience Community
  • Conduct needs assessments; design convenings; design content for web resource centers; facilitate program development and collaborations
  • Develop and manage earned income program of consulting services to North American museums
  • Administer Sites of Conscience grant program for American applicants
  • Assist with identifying appropriate exchange partners; work with members to identify likely projects; mentor members through proposal writing and exchange planning; review and summarize proposals for Executive Committee
  • Develop and Disseminate Learning Resources
  • Research and document program models; develop and disseminate evaluation tools; oversee database of sites; develop database of consultants
  • Support Communications
  • Draft articles for e-newsletter
  • Conduct ongoing network development
  • Recruit and liaise with members; research emerging in human rights, historic preservation, civic dialogue, arts, and other fields and identify opportunities for collaboration; co-design and organize Program Committee meetings


Candidates should be fluent in Spanish, have at least 5 years experience in the Museum field, have excellent project management and oral and written communication skills, and demonstrate experience working with people from diverse cultures and working styles.
