Video from the “Shaping Our Future” initiative event now available

As we shared earlier this month, the National Issues Forums Institute (NIFI), in association with the American Commonwealth Partnership, launched their latest year-long national dialogue initiative, Shaping Our Future: How Should Higher Education Help Us Create the Society We Want?, with an event at the National Press Club in DC on September 4th. The video of the event is now available online…

Introduced by Harry Boyte, the National Coordinator of the American Commonwealth Partnership, the event featured Martha Kanter, the U.S. Undersecretary of Education;  Nancy Cantor, Chancellor, Syracuse University;  Muriel Howard, President, American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU);  Bernie Ronan, Chair, The Democracy Commitment;  Kaylesh Ramu, President, Student Government Association, University of Maryland Baltimore County;  Scott Peters, Co-Director, Imagining America;  Harry Boyte, National Coordinator, The American Commonwealth Partnership;  and Bill Muse, President, National Issues Forums Institute.

You can watch the September 4th announcement by clicking on the image above, or by visiting the NIFI blog, where you can learn more about the event and see a list of over 50 educational institutions that have already committed to holding “Shaping Our Future” forums.  You can also download the intitiative’s materials for free from the National Issues Forums website.  More info after the break…

Also Watch David Matthews’ Closing Remarks

Kettering Foundation President, David Mathews, gave his closing remarks to the September 4th event via video, focusing not only on the importance of this initiative, but on how the average citizen can “reflect on how colleges and universities might help the country tackle some of its most vexing problems.”  You can also watch this video and learn more about the Kettering Foundations involvement on their website.

NCDD is supporting this initiative by encouraging all of you to host a forum!  NIF and ADP would love to see many of you involved, and have prepared a great little document to help you get started:  So You Want To Hold A Forum About “Shaping Our Future”?

If you’re interested in holding a forum on how colleges and universities might help the country tackle some of its most vexing problems, you can contact Bill Muse of NIF (bmuse@nifi.org) or Harry Boyte of ACP (boyte001@umn.edu) to let them know you’d like to get involved.  And let NCDD director Sandy Heierbacher know by email that you plan to get involved; we’d love to know!
