Daniel Kemmis earned a degree in government from Harvard in 1968. Returning to his native Montana, he was elected to the state legislature, where he became the Minority Leader and then Speaker of the House. His first book, Community and the Politics of Place was published in 1990, the same year he became Mayor of Missoula. The Good City and the Good Life was published in 1996. In 1997, President Clinton awarded him the Charles Frankel Prize for “outstanding contribution to the field of the humanities.” Mr. Kemmis served for many years on the board of the Kettering Foundation before becoming a Kettering Associate. He also served on the boards of the Northwest Area Foundation and Philanthropy Northwest. His newest book, Citizens Uniting will be published during the summer of 2020.
