Next Steps: Research and Practice to Advance Indian Education

This book is a collection of essays devoted both to education for tribal self-determination and to the need for an approach in education that builds on the strengths of Native languages and culture and the resilience of Native peoples.

The editors asked 12 Native scholars such questions as "What is 'Indian education' today?" and "How will it look in the future?" The essays they received explore the issues that face educators working with Indigenous students. Two important themes are education for tribal self-determination and the need to turn away from discredited deficit theories of education to an approach that builds on the strengths of Native languages and cultures and the basic resilience of Indigenous peoples.
