Motivated for Involvement? Citizen Participation in Health Care

Patient and public involvement has become an important aim of recent health policy. Over the last 20 years initiatives have asked the public to advise on new services and comment on the health care they receive, but it is only in recent years that policies have promoted social inclusion and cooperation with citizens. However, although citizen involvement has been promoted, little is known about what motivation, if any, people have to get involved in the NHS, or the degree of participation that patients actually prefer. This study invited local people and voluntary group representatives from six different regions in England, as well as a number of national voluntary organizations, to bring their voices to the debate.
