Center for Wise Democracy

The Center assists communities in creating Wisdom Councils – randomly-selected, facilitated 'juries,' reflecting the larger diversity of the community – which engage in dialogue about the larger system and arrive at creative consensus on shared visions. These visions in turn serve to increase the quality of the dialogue among the larger community.

The Center for Wise Democracy (CWD) is a 501 (C)3 non-profit organization developed out of Jim Rough's work with Dynamic Facilitation and the Wisdom Council. The CWD was formed in May of 2001 to support the development of Wisdom Councils in public settings like cities, counties, states and nations.

The Wisdom Council is a new structural approach to helping large systems of people address issues collaboratively and creatively, and achieve breakthrough results. No matter how many people are involved, the Wisdom Council promises to structure a thoughtful, community-wide conversation about the most pressing issues and facilitate a unanimous 'We the People' viewpoint.

Wisdom Council experiments have been held in the Rogue Valley of Oregon; in Pleasantville, New York; and in Port Townsend, Washington.
